During the mission, participants met with key lawmakers, agency heads and the state’s chief executive, advocating for issues crucial to the Jewish community. The issues at the forefront of this year’s lobbying included transportation funding for our community’s school busing program, the ever-increasing antisemitism and targeted attacks, even in the heart of our own community, as well as security funding for our state’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP-IL). While the legislature has currently allocated just $2 million for security funding, AIOI is advocating for the complete $18 million that is necessary to protect our community’s most vulnerable schools and organizations.

Agudath Israel of Illinois Spearheads Productive and Successful Lobby Day
Agudath Israel of Illinois embarked on its annual Springfield Mission on April 30, 2025, and it was one of the most productive to date. The event brought together nearly fifty community and organizational leaders who engaged in highly productive meetings with elected officials and carried out a packed agenda.

It was extremely impactful when a member of the community who survived a terrorist attack shared his story for the first time, demonstrating the vital need for security funding to protect a targeted community in our climate. Unfortunately, antisemitism and even violent attacks are at an all-time high in recent history. Indeed, yesterday’s meetings have already produced tangible results; scores of lawmakers are newly committed to support bringing full funding to our security programs. The meetings and conversations showcased AIOI’s commitment to strengthening relationships with policymakers and advancing the interests of our community.
The agenda included productive meetings with Senate President Don Harmon, Speaker of the House Emanuel “Chris” Welch, and Majority Leader Robyn Gabel who committed to restoring the school transportation busing grant. Meetings were also held with House Republican Leader Tony McCombie and Senate Deputy Republican Leader Sue Rezin, who both expressed their support for our issues at hand and for our community.
Attendees enjoyed a beautiful lunch reception hosted by State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, who is a staunch and outspoken supporter of Israel and the Jewish people. Treasurer Frerichs, his family, and his home have all been subject to vandalism and threats from pro-Palestinian protestors on multiple occasions. The treasurer spoke about his decision to invest $15 million in Israel bonds that were set to expire and how he purchased an additional $10 million as well.
Governor JB Pritzker discussed the continuous rise in antisemitism and his efforts to continue to speak out and address antisemitism from all areas. The Governor always expresses his appreciation of our community’s advocacy and how effective Agudath Israel continues to be with the support of our community together with us.
“We are thrilled with the outcome of this year’s Springfield Mission so far,” shares Rabbi Shlomo Soroka, director of government affairs at Agudath Israel of Illinois. “The dedication and passion of our community leaders and organizational leaders is what’s really instrumental in making our voice heard and our mission a success.”
The Springfield Mission serves as a vital platform for Agudath Israel of Illinois to promote the needs and concerns of the Orthodox Jewish community. Agudath Israel of Illinois looks forward to building on the momentum generated during this year’s mission and continuing to work tirelessly on behalf of the community.
